It is too easy—and too partisan—to simply place the blame on the policies of President George W. Bush. We are all responsible for the decisions our country makes. We have a Congress. We have an independent judiciary. We have checks and balances. We are a nation of laws. We have free speech. We have a free press. Have they all failed us? Why has America's public discourse become less focused and clear, less reasoned?

It doesn't surprise me that audience consumption & the direction of / role that media plays in democracy makes a key point in Al Gore's Assault on Reason. It seems as though Al's personal accounts of the effect of media on democracy will deliver impact. Interestingly, Al appears to favor interactive media for its ability to provide platforms for participation and makes calls for the www to remain open.

Calling for an open web – I wonder what Al thinks of Google & if he in fact uses it at all.

So I am getting a little sick of Al playing the righteous radical card when he ran for President and was silent on most of it!

Having said that the article is an interesting read.

Anecdotally one of the first "revolutions" in election campaigns was a Kennedy, Nixon debate that was both televised and broadcast on radio. Nixon turned up after a flight unshaven and a little dishevelled and he didn't wear any makeup under the studio lights. Kennedy on the other hand looked fresh, clean and tidy. He won the debate according to the TV audiences but Nixon won according to those listening on the radio... the power of good looks and tv!

Also M you may be interested in this Harpers article: The Making of Mitt Romney which goes into some detail about all the polling, analysis and money spent on the creation of a candidate... not policy you understand because who the hell cares about that!
